We recently interviewed Katrina Nolan from Burnish & Black - Jewellery Design about starting a business with friend Louise Payjack-Guillou.
How did Burnish & Black start?
After meeting at Middlesex University and dabbling in jewellery design, Louise and I decided to branch off a year and a half ago and start our jewellery company: Burnish & Black. We initially ran a stool in Portobello market, but after hearing about Spitalfields market we decided to relocate. We run our stool here most Saturdays 11:00-17:00.
Where did the name Burnish & Black come from?
We decided on a two part name; Burnish, because our jewellery combines polished metals such as spoons and vintage watches; and Black, because we oxidise a lot of our products.
What inspires you?
I worked with jewellery previously, incorporating spoons into my designs. Louise's main focus was watches, so we have combined the two together to up-cycle the old and create something fresh and new.
Thanks for the interview!
